I’ve documented for a couple of years now the problems that have plagued single Japanese women at foreign borders.
The weak yen has led a lot of sex workers – and criminal operations that employ sex workers – to go to countries like the US, Australia, and New Zealand to ply their trade. That’s led customs and border officials to suspect, detain and, in some cases, even refuse entry to Japanese women who have no relation to Japan’s sex and nightlife trades.
But what happens when you are in the sex trade…but just want to take a cheeky vacation abroad? Unfortunately, one Japanese porn actress says that, when she tried to enter New Zealand, border cops sent her home.
The incident shows the precarious situation sex workers in Japan (or anywhere) occupy. On the one hand, she’s gaining little sympathy – even among porn fans! – in her home country.
On the other hand, it’s not like customs agents’ suspicions are groundless. As a recent case in Taiwan shows, some Japanese adult actresses are taking the risk of working abroad. And Japanese law might be driving them to do it.
Why Fukuda Yua was detained and turned away

21-year-old Fukuda Yua, nicknamed “Yuachi,” got her start as a pinup (gravure) idol with Gold Circle Entertainment under the name Asagiri Mashiro (朝霧ましろ) before moving to MOODYZ and making her adult video (AV) debut. MOODYZ, hyping her obvious beauty, has been marketing her heavily as a “national treasure-level beauty.”
It seems to have worked. Her debut in November 2025 topped the sales and streaming charts of FANZA, one of Japan’s premier go-to porn streaming sites.
In other words, Fukuda was heavily into her porn star debut when she attempted to fly to New Zealand recently. By her own account, it didn’t go well. She posted the following on June 12th:

“I was detained for six hours and subjected to a drug test, and after all that they refused me entry. 10 officers came, seized my luggage, and stuck me in a dirty, solitary cell. I was just forcefully repatriated to Japan. Since this is gonna be a mark on my record, it’s gonna be hard traveling to other countries, so I guess my solo travel days are over.”
Fukuda insists she wasn’t going to NZ for any work-related purpose. However, she entered the country without any concrete itinerary, which raised suspicions. (she did have a tour bus reservation, she says.) “I don’t like being time-bound,” she told a fan. It’s unclear if she was upfront about her occupation.
The response on X was uniformly unsympathetic. On both her account and that of Takizawa Gareso, a scandal-tracking account, other users laid into her for the audacity of thinking she could travel abroad while being a porn star.
“New Zealand’s doing its job. It’s people like this who drive down the value of the Japanese passport,” one vomited out.
“This is just how sex workers get treated abroad,” another notes. “A country that fawns over porn actresses like idols is the abnormal one.”
The replies on Takizawa’s account are especially ironic. Media reports say that Takizawa makes most of his money through affiliate marketing. Those affiliates include…the Japanese porn site FANZA!

You have to sympathize with Fukuda, especially if all she was trying to do is take a break from work. But authorities had grounds to be suspicious, as this sort of thing has happened before. In fact, it happened within the past year to another Japanese porn actress who did go abroad with the intent to work.
