“How do you protect your daughter when you can’t even convince your own husband?” Japanese feminist activist (and occasional Unseen Japan writer) Sachiko Ishikawa joins Unseen Japan’s Jay Allen to discuss how women in Japan married to Japanese men often struggle in their own households for support and understanding.
In my discussion with Sachi on this issue, we talked about a recently essay from UJ writer Harumi Sasaki, who talked about her struggles getting her husband to understand how difficult it can be as a working mother in Japan. Sachi readily agreed and shared several anecdotes from her own marriage. In Sachi’s words: “A lot of Japanese men…are not taught how to empathize.”

"Noah [at Unseen Japan] put together an itinerary that didn’t lock us in and we could travel at our own pace. In Tokyo, he guided us personally on a walking tour. Overall, he made our Japan trip an experience not to forget." - Kate and Simon S., Australia

The Unseen Japan Crowdcast
This video is an edited and enhanced version of a discussion from the most recent Unseen Japan Crowdcast, which we hold every month. Crowdcasts are free and viewable at broadcast time; after one week, we lock them for Patrons. However, we also publish the best clips from each episode on our YouTube channel.

If you liked this video, please subscribe to us on YouTube! We put up a new clip from the Crowdcast every week. Additionally, we are busily producing long-form versions of some of our most popular essays, such as Noah Oskow’s recent reading of his article on the explosion of Mt. Bandai during the Meiji Era. If you want to listen to Unseen Japan rather than just read us, our YouTube channel is for you!
